learndirect comment on the Richard Review of Apprenticeships

learndirect welcomes the long awaited report from Doug Richard on the future of apprenticeships. We are pleased to see the continued emphasis on maths and English and particularly welcome the recommendation all apprentices achieve L2 maths and English before they can complete their programme. We agree these qualifications must be reflective of the workplace and therefore must be designed and delivered in partnership with employers. learndirect’s Functional Skills offer for apprenticeships provides a flexible progression route for learners to achieve these standards which are rightly expected by employers.

We urge the government to continue its drive for quality and innovation in the delivery of apprenticeships. Apprenticeships must continue evolving to reflect technological developments and the digital world we increasingly inhabit. Online delivery gives apprentices the flexibility to fit their learning around their work patterns, reducing the time they need to be away from their place of work.

Chief Executive Sarah Jones said: "We welcome the findings which will ensure employers get the skilled workforce they need to compete in the future. Whilst supporting the focus on young people, we are pleased Doug Richard’s proposals do not limit opportunities for adults in the workplace who are looking to retrain in a new role.

"Given our work with around 20,000 apprentices a year, we will be considering these recommendations alongside the recent findings from the Holt Review and BIS Select Committee Inquiry over the coming weeks."
