'Be selective' when hosting media content

Small businesses should adopt a discerning attitude when hosting media content on their website, it has been suggested.

Small firms need to be selective when it comes to hosting media content on their website, according to Hostway.

Thomas Herbert, product manager at the domain name registration, web design and online hosting company, explains that this ensures their web resources are used as efficiently as possible.

He states such enterprises need to make a plan in terms of their online resource capacity, as well as its current position with regard to expenditure through investment and earnings via growth and development.

Smaller retailers may not always have funds to pour money into purchasing a large office server network, making it increasingly important that they are selective in terms of what they put on it, he explains.

For example, Mr Herbert suggests small firms do not have video clips of every single one of the products they sell - maybe opting just to showcase the top five in this format.

"You should narrow it down according to how many people are going to be accessing your website and how optimum it's going to be, then just look at the technologies on how you are going to build your website," he recommends.

The expert suggests that firms ask themselves whether videos need to be shown in a high-quality format - and suggests they opt for the lowest quality possible if this is not a necessary requirement.

Mr Herbert's comments follow the publication of a study by Verdict Research, which recently predicted UK consumers will spend a total of £82.3 billion during the final quarter of 2008.
