Top 10 to battle for Start-Up Stars Awards

Nation's top new businesses compete for record prize.

Ten new businesses are to battle it out in London next week in the annual HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards.

Chosen from hundreds of new companies across the UK, the national finalists will be competing for a record £50,000 cash prize, along with a business networking visit to the London offices of Google and £5,000 worth of AdWords pay-per-click advertisements.

They include a company that sells pasteurised, free range liquid egg whites, an underwater technology company that produces equipment for the oil and gas industries and a brewery that in less than 12 months has secured deals with Tesco, Sainsbury's and Oddbins, as well as secured export contracts to nine different countries.

Among the other finalists are an electrical contracting company that supplies qualified electricians to the Leicestershire area, an online pharmacy, a fair trade gifts company, an importer of BMX bikes, equipment and clothing, and a firm producing 'green' male grooming products.

In addition to the main competition, four start-ups will compete for the HSBC Green Award, which recognises the new business that has made the biggest environmental contribution.

The winners will be announced on Wednesday, October 29th.

Previous finalists include Concert Live, Red Engineering Design and Blue i UK.
