Managers 'need to be trained about discrimination'

Discrimination education for managers is vitally important, expert explains.

It is important that managers are made aware of the ways in which workplace discrimination can be combated, an expert has said.

Jean Kelly of Jean Kelly Consultancy, which assists firms looking to eradicate bullying from the workplace, claimed that teaching managers about the subject can be vital if companies wish to avoid the possibility of facing an employment tribunal.

"Employers are vicariously liable for the behavior of their staff, so training managers so that they have a responsibility to combat discrimination, bullying and harassment is essential," she remarked.

Ms Kelly added that it is the responsibility of managers to "lead by example" and try to make sure that any discrimination taking place is stamped out.

The comments follow those made by Martyn Sloman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development last week, in which he claimed that it is "essential" for employers to invest in the training of staff.
