Learning new skills 'key to employee satisfaction'

Meeting

Developing new attributes is vital to maintaining morale and retaining staff, says employees' body.

People who have the opportunity to develop new skills and make the most of their talents at work will be generally more satisfied in their work, which can ultimately be beneficial to business, it has been claimed.

Nigel Stanley, head of campaigns at the Trades Union Congress (TUC), said fair pay and giving employees a degree of autonomy over how they work are also essential in maintaining good staff morale.

His comments come after a study from the TUC and YouGov found that as many as six million workers in the United Kingdom are not satisfied in their job. That is the equivalent of around one quarter of the total workforce.

A lack of skills and training opportunities were among the biggest factors for unhappiness with an employer, with seven million people saying they have not received enough development.

Recent research from GFK NOP found that satisfaction with an employer has a direct impact on staff retention, as 69 per cent of dissatisfied employees said they want to leave their current job within 12 months.
