New framework to support apprenticeships, skills development and innovation in UK manufacturing industry.
The government has launched a new framework designed to support the UK's manufacturing sector with £150 million for developing skills, improving the industry's image and increasing opportunities for overseas development.
In addition to the medium-term funding, the ‘New Challenges, New Opportunities’ report is also designed to ensure manufacturing's long-term sustainability by encouraging the adoption of a low-carbon economy and increasing the sector's skills base.
Skills secretary John Denham said the framework will make it easier for manufacturers to access training for their staff, while also offering support to increase the number of apprenticeships in the sector.
Furthermore, £2.4 million will be invested by the Technology Strategy Board to aid technological innovation.
Business secretary John Hutton said: "Manufacturing is central to the success of the UK economy and it is vital the sector has the right foundations to endure the current economic slowdown and emerge stronger and fitter than ever."
The Barrow and Furness MP added that the UK's manufacturing sector currently generates around £150 billion a year and accounts for three million jobs.
