Staff training boosted through e-learning in London borough

Workers employed by the London Borough of Merton have benefited from an increase in staff training after an e-learning system was set up.

In January this year, the borough enabled employees to improve their skills through online learning.

Set up in conjunction with Me Learning, the system enabled staff to increase their knowledge without spending all their time in the classroom, reports HR magazine.

Employees are now able to access the learning material from any computer with access to the internet.

Once workers have built up their knowledge through e-learning, they progress to more formal learning.

Chloe McSweeney, information strategy manager for Merton Council, commented: "Investing in online training has been a learning curve for me and I am delighted to be seeing such positive results this year."

By June this year, the borough had experienced an increase in staff training of 120 hours.

The system allows managers to check on the progress of individuals and to see whether workers have passed or failed.

It is hoped the programme will make it easier for the organisation to stay in line with government legislation on training for social care staff.

The online system allows for flexibility as more modules can be added as and when they are required.

Earlier this month, Cloughbane Farm Foods told the Belfast Telegraph that investing in a staff training programme had "significantly enhanced" the performance of the company.

Lorna Robinson, co-owner of the company, claimed it has seen increases in efficiency, which should help it achieve better sales in the Republic of Ireland.
