Morrisons announces its dedication to staff training

Supermarket chain Morrisons has announced that it is dedicated to developing workers and providing them with careers, not just jobs.

The company revealed that it is taking steps to improve its NVQ training scheme.

It claimed that it has always had a "commitment to nurturing its people".

However, it said a new initiative within the company would provide workers with a "clear and direct path to progress" throughout the business.

Under the new programme, workers will be able to increase their skills and gain qualifications such as NVQs.

Through a 13-week course, members of staff can pick up a level two NVQ certificate in retail.

Skills training at a number of different levels will be available to employees with a clear five-step career ladder laid out for those looking to progress within the organisation.

This is based on the NVQ training and qualifications workers obtain, with the top rung of the ladder reserved for those who achieve an NVQ level five, which is the equivalent of a foundation degree.

Norman Pickavance, group human resources director at Morrisons, commented: "Even in these challenging economic conditions, Morrisons is committed to hiring and training new people to keep retail as the engine room of the economy and support our continuing growth."

This comes after rival supermarket Asda announced that it has reached record levels of staff retention.

Sarah Dickins, the retail people director for the firm, told Personnel Today that this is because of the numerous opportunities for progression and development within the organisation.
