Trio of chippies shortlisted for training gong

Three of the UK's top fish and chip shops have been shortlisted to win an award for their commitment to staff training.

All three of the establishments asserted that one of the keys to their success was the fact that they properly train staff and have a strong workforce.

The eateries nominated for the Staff Training and Development Award in the national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Competition were the Real Food Cafe in Stirlingshire, Cornwall's Harbour Lights and Royal Fisheries in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Carol Fusco, owner of Royal Fisheries, said she was "really excited" to be shortlisted for the gong for a third time.

"We are committed to the development of our staff and we enjoy the benefits in the form of higher morale from employees and a highly skilled workforce," she commented.

Sarah Heward, who runs the fish and chip shop in Tyndrum, Stirlingshire, said she "strongly believes" in providing customers with top quality produce served by "skilled and knowledgeable staff".

For this reason, she asserted that she is "committed to investing in the future of all my employees".

Peter Fraser, who spent 19 years in the Royal Navy before running Harbour Lights, said he makes sure all staff are brought up to the eatery's high standards quickly by investing in training.

His restaurant and that of Ms Fusco have both achieved the Investors in People standard.

Last month, the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act received Royal Assent and this will see the introduction of the Time to Train initiative.

This will enable workers to request time off to improve their skills and complete accredited programmes related to their work.
