Many small firms are increasing their
environmentally-friendly efforts as a result of the ongoing effects of
the credit crunch, it has been suggested.
A lot of small companies are taking steps to enhance their green credentials as a result of the global economic slowdown, according to an industry expert.
Managing director of British Eco Energy Andrew Moore explains this is because financial pressures mean firms are looking to reduce their energy bills.
In addition, some smaller enterprises appear to be addressing any carbon footprint issues they have as they look to emphasise their green image to their clients.
He says there is a degree of competition between companies as they seek to display their ecologically-aware credentials, with certain small firms opting for renewable energy resources such as wind turbines.
Mr Moore explains: "Some companies ... are putting them up. Their competitors are seeing the wind turbine going up on their sites and feel: 'We need to keep up with our competitors and we should have one as well.'"
He suggests many companies are turning to wind power because the UK has had a number of poor summers over the past couple of years where there has not been much sun.
As such, solar panels have fallen out of favour with some entrepreneurs.
"Sometimes, solar is a bit of a turn off for some people who don't think we get enough sun, but we do get plenty of wind," Mr Moore concludes.
The British Eco Energy representative's comments follow the publication of the Committee on Climate Change report entitled Building a low-carbon economy - the UK's contribution to tackling climate change in December 2008.
It sets out how firms can meet budgets by using existing technologies.
