Communication skills are critical for
managers during the economic downturn, according to experts.
Staff training that improves managers' leadership and communication skills could be crucial to those running a business in the current economic climate.
According to one expert, effective communication among managers is of particular importance when core values need to be reinforced.
Kelly O'Brien, director of the Centre for Professional Communication at Texas Christian University's Neeley School of Business, explained that managers should hone their communication skills to guide employees through difficult times.
"In terms of leadership, the ability to inspire others through effective communication, to be clear about the vision of a company [and] where an organisation is going, that is critical," he told the Fort Worth Business Press.
Mr O'Brien also highlighted the importance of honest and direct communication between managers and employees about the challenges those running a business during a recession are up against.
He explained that employees are likely to feel some relief when their bosses openly acknowledge difficult times, as they will be reassured that their leaders "are grounded and are facing the reality at hand".
Organisational psychologist and management consultant David Javitch also values the importance of effective communication during times of economic hardship.
Writing for the Entrepreneur website recently, Mr Javitch warned that lack of communication from the top leads to "a rampant rumour mill" that could have harmful consequences for those running a business.
He said that communication needs to be regular, clear, to the point and honest. Even when bad news needs to be delivered, Mr Javitch suggests an upbeat approach.
"Realistically, sad economic news delivered in a depressing way leads to downbeat employees, which in turn leads to decreased motivation," he warned, adding that this could have a "domino effect" where productivity and ultimately revenue decrease as a result.
