Seafood producer attributes success to staff training

The Seafood Company has attributed its success at a recent food industry awards ceremony to the quality of its staff training and development scheme.

Judges at the Food Manufacture Excellence Awards handed the Findus-owned business three major honours, including the Company of the Year award.

It also claimed the Productivity Through Skills award and the top honour in the Seafood category.

The Seafood Company has put an enhanced employee training programme in place over the last 12 months, which has contributed to efficiency levels at its Grimsby factory improving by 125 per cent and productivity rising by 20 per cent.

It has also helped to improve staff retention, by developing a learning culture which gives all employees the opportunity to obtain formal qualifications and provides them with a clear career progression route.

Peter Ward, The Seafood Company's managing director, said the awards were a tribute to the hard work of the staff at the factory and to the investment the firm had made in them.

"Our approach to manufacturing and staff development is intrinsic to our success and we will continue to invest in our people and our processes as the business develops," added Mr Ward.

Newport-based engineering company Celtic Process Control recently attributed its growth over the last 12 months to its investment in staff training and development.

The business has seen turnover rise by 25 per cent in the past year and expanded its workforce from 40 to 65, despite the recession.

Managing director David Morgan told the Western Mail that spending money on leadership and management training had helped to improve morale and to encourage staff members to come up with ideas to save money and improve processes.
