Workplace stress is a major area of concern for European managers, according to new research.

Four out of five European managers claim they are concerned about how workplace stress affects their employees. This is according to the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks.

Health and Social work is an industry where stress is of particular concern, with 91 per cent of companies in the industry regarding it as a source of worry. In addition, the education industry also suffers from high stress levels, with workplace stress concerning 84 per cent of managers.

The survey looked at workplace stress as a health and safety issue and almost half the respondents said they found psycho-social risks more difficult to deal with than regular health and safety problems. Some 54 per cent said there is a lack of sensitivity to the issue and 50 per cent said a lack of understanding was a problem.

From an economic viewpoint, workplace stress is a major obstacle to productivity across the UK and Europe, according to experts from the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work.

Workplace stress can often be alleviated through providing staff training that enhances their ability to do their job with confidence. Stress is often caused when employees struggle to deal with the pressures of their jobs, and opportunities to learn online or at work are helpful in alleviating this and boosting morale among staff.
