Keeping hold of talented workers is a key part of a business becoming successful in the present economic climate.

This is according to chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute Ruth Spellman, who noted that managers need to "focus on creating a talent culture" that ensures workers are "nurtured and developed".

She explained that if British firms are to grow following the recession, it is imperative that they focus on attracting and keeping "the right people for the job", something that managers will find easier if they make developing their teams a priority.

Ms Spellman was commenting following the release of a new study from King's College London and Speechly Bircham, which revealed that 29 per cent of human resource professionals saw a rise in the number of workplace complaints made in 2009.

The figures also showed that 44 per cent of respondents predict workforce sizes to rise in 2010, while 23 per cent are anticipating more complaints to be made.

In addition, 79 per cent are looking at ways to improve relationships in the workplace, while 91 per cent are attempting to boost the effectiveness of managers.

High-pressure working environments created by the recession were cited as one reason for the increase, but Ms Spellman stated that managers having to be tougher with staff "is no excuse for bullying" and added that the CMI does not blame the economic downturn for relationships between personnel and their superiors breaking down over the past 12 months.

"High targets and increased pressure to perform can lead to excessively dominant management styles," she concluded.
