Olympics recruits McDonald's to train volunteers

The organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games have named McDonald’s as an official ‘volunteer support partner’ to help recruit and train thousands of workers for the event.

This unprecedented partnership will see the fast-food chain help Olympic organisers to prepare some 70,000 people who will be volunteering to work at the games. The volunteers, or 'Games Makers' as they will be known, will be “vital” to the Games’ success, according to 2012 chairman Lord Sebastian Coe.

He explained that McDonald’s has been selected due to its reputation for providing excellent staff training and qualifications opportunities for its employees. Coe added that the company is “pre-eminent in the field of service training and retention."

McDonald’s chief people officer and senior vice president, David Fairhurst, said the company was “delighted” to be involved with the scheme. He added, "We have a proven track record in providing skills, training and qualifications, plus quick, consistent customer service to over two million people a day."

The Games Makers are to work across all Olympic and Paralympic sites and those with specialist skills will be recruited from 27 July 2010. General volunteers, who will be used mainly as ticket checkers and to direct visitors, will be recruited from 15 September 2010.

The volunteer placements will be advertised in the 1,200 McDonald's branches across the country.
