A report published this week by Capita Learning and Development warns that UK businesses are fearful that a lack of skills could hinder their recovery from the recession.
The survey questioned more than 500 senior managers and found that 70 per cent said a lack of staff skills will be their greatest obstacle when trying to take advantage of the economic upturn. After redundancies caused by the recession, many managers said their staff are now under-trained and are struggling to cope with more demanding jobs.
Some 40 per cent of those asked warned that some of their staff’s skills are under threat of becoming obsolete as their business develops. Even more concerning is the 55 per cent of managers who said that their firms are simply failing to deliver adequate training for employees.
The managing director of Capita Learning and Development stated, "The post-recession landscape demands a range of new skills, yet the UK workforce is critically lacking essential capabilities."
