Balfour Beatty, the construction giant, has announced plans to launch a range of apprenticeships aimed at people in the Merseyside area who are currently unemployed.
Young people will be able to develop qualifications in areas including facilities management and construction trades.
The leader of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Ronnie Round, welcomed news of the new opportunities for people in the region to learn at work and undergo high-level staff training. He said, "Through this innovative and far-reaching programme Balfour Beatty will transform the futures of a great many young people. There is a huge amount of untapped talent within our communities and it is our collective duty to harness that potential." He went on to add that apprenticeship schemes are "vital to social and economic progress."
Balfour Beatty’s Chris Whitehead said the firm was looking for "motivated, hard-working young people who are committed to a better future," to apply for the scheme. He added that there has so far been no sign of a shortage of eager, talented young people in the Merseyside area who are hoping to get an apprenticeship through the programme.
The company says it hopes that the apprenticeship scheme will enable young people to benefit from the significant projects that it is currently involved with, which include building the remaining schools under the £60 million Knowlsey Schools Programme and the Wave 2 schools programme in Liverpool.
