One of the largest pub companies and breweries in the UK is offering
students a new option – a three-year apprenticeship scheme to teach them
how to run a pub.
Greene King hopes to boost the future of its pub portfolio by offering 50
lucky individuals the chance to gain a unique access route to the industry
by learning at work. The scheme is more pertinent than ever, as 40 pubs a
week are currently closing in the UK.
The graduate training scheme will launch this August and will teach young
people all they need to know, in terms of management skills and practical
knowledge, to run a pub, a hotel or a restaurant in several locations
around the UK.
Head of employee relations at Greene King, Ingrid Newbould, says that the
company is looking for a special type of person to join the industry and
really breathe fresh life into it. She explained, “We are not just looking
for people with retail or hospitality experience, we are looking for fun
and energetic people who can bring ideas. In a challenging jobs market for
graduates, we feel we have something dynamic and motivating to
offer.”
Comparing itself to the popular Marks & Spencer graduate scheme, Greene
King says successful graduates could be earning as much as £35,000 a year
plus 50 per cent bonuses upon completion of the course.
