New research by Lifelong Learning UK has found that almost half of
employees said they would feel more confident at work if they had better
training and education.
Some 49 per cent of respondents questioned by the online information portal
said that better training would help them to feel more confident using
computers and other technology in the workplace.
In addition to this, half also agreed that they could save more time at
work if they had a better grasp of key IT skills. As a result of the
research, Lifelong Learning UK is now urging businesses to invest in
training their staff. A range of online training courses are available, as
well as opportunities to provide training for employees in the workplace,
through learndirect.
The National Computing Centre’s Michael Dean agrees that basic skills can
enhance a business’s performance through empowering and education staff. He
says that training budgets are often tight and staff get neglected: “A lot
of the budgets for training, because it typically comes at the end of the
project, often gets cut, and maybe not all training is delivered as deeply
as it could be.”
Figures from the Confederation of British Industry found that only 22 per
cent of companies provide remedial IT training for new employees straight
from school or college.
