Businesses need to take a diverse approach to recruiting and retaining employees in order to make the most of the wide range of talent that is available.
This is according to new research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), which concluded that many firms are not yet "up to speed" in this area of their operations.
Released to coincide with International Women's Day yesterday (March 8th), the body's Opening Up Talent for Business Success: Integrating Talent Management and Diversity study called on firms to ensure they take on employees from a variety of backgrounds, citing BT, Credit Suisse and the Guardian Media Group as three businesses that are leading the way in this area.
Enterprises such as these are creating an "inclusive and open workplace" thanks to the methods they use to attract workers and develop their skills and resourcing adviser at the CIPD Claire McCartney called on all companies to incorporate diversity into their talent management techniques.
"It's important that organisations see talent management and diversity as more, not less important, in periods of economic uncertainty to outwit and outperform competitors through their people," she said, adding that they will be able to "benefit from a stream of differing views and practical answers to problems" by "opening up" their talent opportunities.
Organisations have also been urged to make the needs of their personnel a top priority during the recession, with StepStone Solutions recently suggesting those that fail to do so will suffer from under-performance as a result.
