Award winning IT department attributes success to training

Yorkshire Water Services has credited its thorough staff training programmes with its winning of the IT Department of the Year award at last year's hotly contested UK IT Industry Awards.

Yorkshire Water's IT Manager, Duncan Bennett, said that the firm's commitment to providing development and training for employees was key to its winning the award. He stated, "We carry out extensive career planning for our team. We have excellent processes and procedures in place, governance is a top priority, we have a completely service-driven culture, and we also like to empower our staff."

He explained how this attention to staff development transformed the team from a "flabby overhead" to a "key enabler of the business."

Bennett added that winning the industry award has had a huge impact on the businesses. It has been able to put the award logo on its presentation material, which Bennett said "shows everyone in the company and in the industry that a well-regarded external body believes that we deserve this title."

He added that the award has helped the firm attract the best talent to its IT graduate training scheme and its apprenticeship programme. He explained, "We pushed this point across at local universities, and we have seen a great response. It has also benefited our apprenticeship scheme."
