learndirect's Six Steps to Making a Change

Knowledge is power image

Step 1: Where do you want to get to? The first step is to decide on your goal...

This is the most important step. If you don't know what it is you really want, you'll struggle to reach your goal.

Think about what's most important to you. Keep your goal simple and make sure it's something you can do.

When you've decided what it is, print off our Make A Change Checklist and write it down.

Have you ever wanted to improve your CV? Maybe you'd like to be able to help the kids with their homework? Or maybe you just want to feel a bit more confident?

Knowledge is power - by learning new skills and qualifications you can gain the power to make a change.

We can help you work out which of our free or low cost qualifications can help you reach your learning goal. For example, we can help you improve your interview skills or boost your reading and writing, everyday maths and IT skills.

Step 2: Need some help? Get some support...

Don't feel you have to make a change on your own - there is help at hand. You might need to give someone a call to find out more information or go somewhere new. For many people, this can feel quite scary.

If you're nervous, first of all think about what you want to say or any questions you want to ask. Writing it down on a pad may help, or even running what you want to say by a friend. This will give you more confidence to talk to someone new when it comes to it.

Once you've found the right place to help you reach your goal, write the contact details in your Make A Change Checklist so you have them to hand.

Step 3: When do you want to reach your goal? The third step is to set a time limit...

When you start something new, it's always a good idea to have a time limit in mind. This will help you keep focused.

So have a think about when you want to make your change by. It could be a date which means something to you - for example, the Christmas holidays, or your birthday. Or you could set a date in a few months' time, or a year's time.

Write down your time limit in your Make A Change Checklist.

Step 4: Keep going by breaking down your goal

Even when you've decided on your goal, it's easy to lose your way if it feels like a big task.

This is why Step 4 is all about breaking your goal down into smaller chunks. This will keep you motivated and make it seem a lot easier.

By taking this approach, you'll soon be making progress towards your goal each week. Use your Make A Change Checklist to write down the different stages to reach your goal. Download it here.

Saying "This week I will learn how to use email" is a lot less off-putting than thinking "I need to learn loads of new IT skills to get the job I want!"

So chat to your tutor about breaking down your goal. And feel free to call them as you go if you're feeling fed up or struggling to make progress - they're there to help!

You might also find it really useful to speak to other learners. The learndirect Community is there so you can talk to people in the same boat. It's a great place to go for advice, to hear about other people's experiences and share any worries you have. Once you've started learning with us you can join in at www.learndirect.co.uk/community.
