Angela Lee, 45 from Northumberland, worked as a customer
service administrator for over 20 years before being made redundant in
2009. After coming to learndirect she's gained qualifications in
maths, English and IT - helping her to improve the chances of getting
another job.
Getting qualified
"Once I was made redundant, I noticed that most adverts in my local newspaper asked for qualifications I didn't have," says Angela.
"I left school at 17 with a few CSEs. My sister-in-law suggested I look into learning with learndirect. I discovered there was a centre in my local high street and went along to see what they had to offer."
Learning from home and in the centre
"I enrolled on maths and English courses," says Angela, and, "I split my learning time between the centre and home, going into the centre around three mornings a week. I enjoyed the atmosphere there, having a chance to speak with the tutors about any queries enabled me to continue learning at home.
"I successfully gained qualifications in maths and English at a level equivalent to GCSE grades. This then spurred me on to brush up on my IT skills.
Being more attractive to employers
"Although I had used computers in my previous role, I wouldn't have been confident enough to sell my skills to a future employer. This changed after completing a 'CLAIT Plus' course, as I became confident in word-processing and using databases," says Angela.
