Boosting the literacy and maths skills of 2.25m adults across England by 2010 is no mean feat, but according to the National Audit Office the £5bn scheme is well on target.
Making a Difference
The watchdog has monitored the progress of the campaign from 2001 to 2007, and has seen 1.5m adults achieve the equivalent of a good GCSE in maths or English, under the Skills for Life scheme.
Phobia of Learning
However, their findings illustrated that there are still many people who feel too embarrassed to enrol on a course, or have a "phobia" of learning.
The report also showed that too many people are still leaving school without basic maths and literacy skills.
In England
- 56% of adults have literacy skills below the level of a good GCSE
- 75% of adults have maths skills below the level of a good GCSE
