According to a recent survey the keyboard and mouse will no longer be the tools of the trade for office workers as voice recognition software becomes more prevalent over the next two decades.
With 60 per cent of respondents believing that computers will be operable without a keyboard or mouse, 69 per cent reckoned that secretaries and general workers would talk directly to computers.
Industry analysts believe that secretaries' productivity will increase considerably with the introduction of voice activation software, which will spell an end to shorthand and dictation.
The survey suggests that the role of secretaries, who are already working longer hours than they were two years ago, will expand to also encompass office and personnel management.
However respondents also made some rather less credible forecasts, with one in twelve believing that within twenty years they would travel to work via teleport, and 18 per cent predicting that company cars would be water-fuelled.
