Brits are recognising an increase in skills as the key to securing their career during a recession, according to the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

More than half (57 per cent) of workers in the country are concerned about their job prospects as a result of the current turbulence in the financial markets, according to a new study.

Conducted on behalf of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the report also shows that more than half (51 per cent) of the country's employees remain confident that they will be able to keep their jobs.

They also said they planned to concentrate on training in order to enhance both their job security and future career prospects.

It is suggested that the present economic climate is inspiring many individuals to rethink their career paths in a positive fashion, with a total of 77 per cent of respondents identifying room for improvement in their skill levels, as well as indicating a willingness to seek out advice about enhancing their skill base.

Just under two-thirds (62 per cent) stated that they felt gaining a new skill or ability would help to make them feel more secure - and happier - in their jobs.

Skills minister Lord Young said it is now more important than ever for people to be given the opportunity to help enhance their workplace skills, adding the government is investing more than £4 billion in skills and education this year alone.

"I would encourage everyone who wants to maximise their skills to take full advantage of this investment," he added.

Meanwhile, Chris Banks, chairman of the LSC, said: "A small investment in learning new skills will make you better prepared to tackle any eventuality, particularly in a tough economy."

The LSC is a non-departmental public body which began its work in 2001.
