UK a "respected international brand" for universities

The UK is well thought of on a global scale in terms of its educational credentials, it has been suggested.

The UK's higher educational establishments are highly regarded on a global scale, according to a sector commentator.

A spokesperson for Universities UK explains there are a number of different reasons why the country is so respected in this field, with the range of different learning options available to students in the region being seen as a key factor.

"England just has more universities to choose from, really. Across the board you have a range of small and large institutions," he adds.

"With the bigger cities - the likes of London, Manchester and Birmingham - they are able to house and accommodate international students well."

The representative explains there are more than 60 institutions in the country, which attracts a high number of learners, while other countries in the UK - such as Wales - do not have as many.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson states that, as a whole, the UK has a number of leading academic institutions which contribute to the region having a worldwide appeal.

He explains: "The UK is still very much seen as a respected international brand."

The representative's comments follow the publication of a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development which suggested that in 2005, one year after leaving compulsory education, less than half (45 per cent) of students who did not attain an upper secondary qualification - such as an A level, five good GCSEs or the vocational equivalent - were employed.

In comparison, more than two-thirds (67 per cent) of their qualified counterparts had been able to get a job.
