Wembley learners top one hundred

Students at Wembley's Learning Hub Direct are celebrating the achievement of 104 National Literacy and Numeracy Test passes and ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) certificates. Brent's Deputy Mayor, Councillor Helga Gladbaum, presented diplomas to successful learners at a ceremony at the Learning Hub recently.

The evening concluded with a celebratory buffet, and with each learner's photograph being added to a wall of achievement to signal their success and to encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

"I'm a great advocate of lifelong learning and a lifelong learner myself," said Councillor Gladbaum. "In a borough like Brent, you have so many people who come here from other countries and who need to acquire the skills that will open up the job prospects and prosperity they need, to enable them to lead full and successful lives in the UK. It was very uplifting today to see people from so many different backgrounds celebrating their success."

Harry Morrison, from Wembley, has worked as a sound engineer, and he was aware that computers are becoming more important in this area. He decided he needed to develop his IT skills, and embarked on the ECDL course. Harry has now passed all seven Modules of the ECDL, together with his National Certificate in Literacy at Level 1. He plans to qualify as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and make a career in computer engineering.

Hazell Balhon, from Kingsbury, started learning to gain some qualifications as when she returns to the Philippines later this year she intends to start a business marketing food supplements.

Ziyad Alassadi, also from Kingsbury, has passed the entire ECDL, plus his literacy and numeracy certificates at Level 1. He is now going on to read for a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Kingston University.

"It is a fantastic achievement that over 90 Learning Hub students have achieved 174 test passes in the last four months, and many more are improving their skills with us in literacy, numeracy and IT", said Claire Rowe, Sales Director at The Learning Hub. "It's a tribute to our tutors that most of our learners are raring to start their next course, to study new subjects, and to recommend their friends and colleagues to us. Many courses are free, and learning is undertaken on a PC with our tutors supporting learners every step of the way."
