Adult learning can be good for mental health, says report

Take a course and be happier, a government-funded report suggests.

Learning new skills throughout life can guard against mental illness, according to a government think tank.

The Foresight report studied how learning improves quality of life. This could include, for example, getting a new job, making new friends and improving brainpower.

Foresight said trying "something new" or rediscovering an interest or hobby was one key way to foster good mental health.

While some people opt for art, fitness or foreign language course, others may choose vocational studies to help them use computers or improve their basic maths and skills.

Many people are taking so-called useful skills courses to help with their career development, or even getting a job - such as a learndirect Brush Up Your Maths course, which can count towards a Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Comments from National Institute of Adult Continuing Education said, however, the number of adult education classes taken in the last three years had fallen by 1.4 million.

It noted also undertaking creative learning was important to mental health.
