"Plenty of jobs" available in the finance sector

The finance sector is bucking the general employment trend, an expert has said.

The jobs market for the financial industry is holding up well under current economic pressures, with numerous sectors experiencing an increased demand for workers, an expert has said.

Teresa Thorrington, Hays Senior Finance's national director, said that demand for accountants is on the rise in the public sector, insurance, oil and gas and several other areas, despite figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showing that the UK's unemployment rate has risen to 5.5 per cent.

"Regardless of the financial climate there will never be enough good people to meet job demand," the spokesperson commented, adding that "there are still plenty of jobs to go around".

However, some sectors are doing better than others, Ms Thorrington explained, with perhaps the areas she mentioned a reflection of numerous comments in the media that companies need to do more to improve their auditing systems.

Approximately 20 per cent of self-employed men and women work in the insurance, banking and finance industry, according to the ONS.
