Numeracy through gardening

Spade in a garden

Practical maths is bringing numeracy to adults in a gardening project, according to a report.

A project is aiming to help adults improve their numeracy skills, writes the Wiltshire Times.

Parents and their children are working with specialist adult learning tutors on a secret garden project at Newtown primary school.

The aim is to help parents improve their skills so they can help their children with homework, as well as getting more out of maths in their everyday lives.

Family learning development worker Sue Huntley told the newspaper: "The programme is to show parents they don’t need to be afraid of going back to learn."

"It's about making numeracy relevant by using percentages, graphs - then they can see how to use it and that also helps the children."

This is achieved by measuring out the garden, drawing up plans with scale drawings and so on - which the tutors hope will reveal how useful maths skills are in a very practical way.

Being bad with numbers can be a source of embarrassment for parents, especially when they realise they cannot help their children with school work.

learndirect maths courses offer learning from the ground up - there are 65 to choose from.
