Trainee teachers 'work to improve' own skills

The government has revealed teachers also find maths and literacy skills difficult.

The government has provided the House of Commons with figures showing how teaching trainees work to pass benchmark literacy and numeracy standards before they go on to be accepted in a teaching position.

All trainees must pass basic skills tests to prove they have the right skills. The Telegraph noted: "The test is designed to drive up standards in the profession and it must be passed before students can qualify as teachers."

The online exams cover literacy, numeracy and ICT and have pass marks of 60 per cent.

Trainees can take the tests as many times as is necessary to pass and many resit them at least once.

A spokesperson for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said: "Ofsted tell us that the standard of teaching training has never been higher and big rises in results show that quality of teaching is improving massively year-in, year-out."

Teaching welcomes people with experience in other careers and it is possible some have not used their basic skills to any great degree for some time.

People who need to brush up on their skills for any kind of career move or promotion could do so through e-learning.
