A new service aims to help people into job and progress their career buy helping them overcome barriers, the government says.
People looking for a job now have access to a new service that could improve their prospects.
The "radical" new advisory service will combine skills and training advice with practical guidance on overcoming barriers to a better life, according to skills secretary John Denham.
His proposals came after research showed vocational qualifications were the key to better career prospects and higher wages.
In addition, skills and development training are a serious issue for small businesses, so the new service is aimed at helping workers develop their careers.
Ten locations for the new adult advancement and careers service were announced by Mr Denham, who described them as a one-stop-shop.
Advisers will seek to help address issues such as training and help into work, plus areas like childcare, money matters, housing and disability.
Mr Denham said: "Everyone deserves the best chance to get on in work and in life - but often people find a range of barriers in their way, whether they are seeking work, trying to get a better job, or worried about redundancy."
The ten centres will operate for a pilot period of two years.
Jobseekers and those looking for promotion can find a range of courses aimed at business, personal development, management and basic skills through learndirect.
