Workplace stress "increasing"

A new study reveals that workplace stress is increasing, despite official measures to improve it.

Employee stress is becoming a bigger problem than ever, according to a new report.

Personnel Today said a poll by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the last year revealed there had been an increase in the numbers of workers who have described their jobs as being stressful.

It also noted the HSE management standards for tacking work-related stress were introduced four years ago.

Management standards might not be wholly to blame, it added, citing social and economic factors as being possible causes.

Personnel Today reported also the HSE's Health at Work Group said there was "little change in the number of employees aware of stress initiatives in their workplace or reporting discussions about stress with their line managers".

Employee dissatisfaction can also be caused by people feeling they do not have the right skills for their job, or they want to learn new skills in order to move up the career ladder.
