Many parents willing to pay extra for a home if it gives children a chance of getting a good education.

The important role of a good education in career development and progress has been reflected in a new study revealing that one quarter of parents would pay more for a home if it fell within the catchment area of a highly-rated state school.

The study by YouGov and Fidelity International's FundsNetwork indicated that despite the tough property market, as many as 4.4 million parents would be prepared to pay more for a property near a good school.

Indeed, as many as 3.9 million would be willing to pay up to £50,000 more for a house if it guaranteed their children eligibility for a high-calibre institution.

Many of those questioned were also prepared to sacrifice more than money to give their children a chance of a good education, with 20 per cent saying they would commute further to work if it meant getting a home in a good catchment zone.

Another 12 per cent said they would be ready to move away from friends and family for the same reason.
