Acquiring skills 'helps people progress in employment'

People hoping to advance in their careers or who want greater job security might find that improving their skills is a "fundamental enabler", it has been claimed.

Recent government figures revealed that more than one-quarter of the UK population are currently in education or training.

The statistics indicated that for every two people in work there is one in some form of education.

Will Cookson, head of skills at Working Links, said training is invaluable, not just for the individual but for the long-term emergence of the UK out of the recession.

"The personal acquisition of skills is a fundamental enabler for individuals to gain, sustain and progress in employment," he stated.

He claimed that training is an effective way to top-up existing skills for those looking to progress in their jobs.

Mr Cookson also noted that those who want to branch out into a new field might find that training is a good way to start them on an alternative career path.

He noted that nearly one-third of the UK workforce does not have a level two qualification - the equivalent to five GCSEs with grades between A and C.

This is despite the fact that by 2020, 85 per cent of jobs are expected to have a level three requirement, he added.

Companies are being encouraged by the government to sign its Skills Pledge, in which they commit to training all their employees to at least a level two standard.

Among the organisations to sign up to this recently was Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which became the 20,000th signatory.
