Maths is one of the key subjects that those looking for jobs should ensure they are proficient in, according to an expert.
Hilary Leevers, assistant director for the Campaign for Science and Engineering, called for greater emphasis to be placed on maths in examinations and school curriculums.
She explained that a good grasp of the subject is an asset that employers "highly value".
The expert noted that being able to do maths was key to a number of other subjects, so those who would like to continue their adult learning in other areas might benefit from first improving their skills in this key subject first.
Indeed, Ms Leevers called for maths to be used more in other areas, such as psychology and economics.
She noted that there are very few subjects in which learners will not need to apply maths in some capacity.
"Maths is a core skill and one that employers highly value. So in driving up mathematical standards in the sciences, you are actually helping the general employability skill," she commented.
Earlier this year, statistics from the Joint Council for Qualifications revealed that maths was one of the most popular subjects with A-level students.
Some 8.6 per cent of the candidates taking exams decided to try for a qualification in maths, which meant it was second only to English.
Ian Wright, schools minister, commented: "These results yet again explode the myth that so-called 'traditional' subjects are in decline - the biggest increases are in maths, further maths and economics."
Maths and further maths were found to be the subjects in which the most students managed to achieve the top grades.
