Changing career 'requires careful planning'

Spokesperson for Monster urges people to think carefully and do research before pursuing a change of career.

A careers expert has advised unsettled employees to plan carefully before moving into a new field.

Corinne Mills, HR adviser at online jobs portal Monster, said that a lot of people are unlikely to change careers in the current climate due to the uncertainty surrounding the jobs market.

However, she also claimed that finding a new vocation can sometimes be "a less risky option" than staying in an existing job, particularly if the new industry or organisation has brighter prospects and more scope for development.

With this in mind, Ms Mills urged people to research their chosen career thoroughly before making any major changes.

She said that people should investigate training options, useful courses and the possibility of work experience before committing to a career switch.

Ms Mills explained: "A career change can be done with some planning. If you are looking to change careers, research it thoroughly.

"A career change is possible as long as you approach it with dedication, enthusiasm and a healthy dose of realism."

Monster recently released a survey which claims that only ten per cent of UK employees believe they are currently in their perfect job, while 14 per cent do not believe in the existence of an ideal job.

Dismissing such pessimism, Julian Acquari of Monster said that more people should "take the opportunity to look into pursuing their ideal job and how they can achieve it, whether through training courses, revamping their CVs or perfecting interview techniques".
