CVs 'most important tool for jobseekers'

Survey reveals that good CVs remain essential for candidates in modern jobs market.

A new survey of employers has revealed that the traditional CV is still believed to be the most important aspect of an initial job application.

Although technological developments have changed some of the methods used to seek and apply for jobs, the study from executive recruitment website experteer.co.uk discovered that the majority of employers still rely on CVs.

It found that 57 per cent of recruiters believe that the importance of an accurate CV has not diminished in the last ten years, despite the development of new technology, onrec.com reports.

Commenting on the findings, managing director of experteer.co.uk Torsten Muth said: "The importance of a well written and presented CV is undisputed.

"Jobseekers need to go the extra mile in preparing their CV and finding the best spots to showcase it on the internet."

In a recent feature on CV tips, the Metro advises job candidates to think of a CV as "your company brochure".

According to the newspaper, a typical recruiter will take just 15 seconds to form an initial assessment of a CV, meaning the document must be able to attract and hold an employer's attention.

Some of the 'golden rules' listed by the Metro include checking the spelling and grammar carefully, limiting the CV to two pages and not including previous salary details.

The newspaper also reminds jobseekers that they should "never lie - but try to be clever" when writing their CV.

Lee Whitehead, a former NHS director at Stoke-on-Trent Primary Care Trust, was recently jailed for 12 weeks after he was discovered to have used false CV details to obtain the job.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and making a false instrument.
