CIPD: People need new skills to flourish during the crunch

People need to develop new skills in order to make the best of the current economic climate, it has been suggested.

People need to be equipped with new skills and abilities so that they can flourish as the credit crunch continues to make its presence felt, according to a sector commentator.

John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, stated in recent days that it is very important for people to be proactive as soon as they lose their jobs, or even before they are made redundant.

He explained that taking proactive steps will help them to ensure they are equipped with new skills for a new role in as short a timeframe as possible.

In addition, the expert stated people should ready themselves by looking for any vacancies that may become - or already be - available as a knowledge of potential new jobs will allow individuals to begin tailoring their skill set at the earliest opportunity.

The CIPD representative said: "It won't necessarily affect the number of people going into unemployment but what it will do is speed up their exit and it will also help ensure that the jobless number falls more quickly when recovery comes."

Mr Philpott's comments follow the publication of the autumn 2008 Labour Market Outlook by the CIPD, which suggested that three-quarters (75 per cent) of organisations are looking to recruit members of staff in the next three months - a reduction from 81 per cent in summer.

Over a quarter (26 per cent) of the bodies surveyed revealed they plan to make redundancies at some point during the next quarter.
