Tailor CVs and use key words, expert advises

When applying for a position, applicants should tailor their CV and use key words to stand out from the crowd, an expert has explained.

People applying for jobs using the internet should do all they can to make their CV stand out from the rest of the pack, an industry expert has suggested.

David Hurst, the managing director of web-based recruitment portal Onrec.com, explains that including key words that are relevant to the position being applied in the text of an application can be an effective strategy.

He notes that some sites use software which searches through all the CVs that have been submitted and selects the ones it deems to be most suitable.

As such, including terms and phrases that the program is likely to look for could help to ensure that a CV is selected as being pertinent to the position being advertised.

"It is very important to think about the skills and qualifications you've got and highlight them so that they get found," Mr Hurst adds, explaining that some online resource will allow users to create CVs for a number of different roles so that they can be individually altered to improve their effectiveness.

The expert's advice may carry extra weight given the current economic climate.

His comments follow the publication of the Monster Employment index in November, which reached a 19-month low and the largest monthly fall in job availability since January.

Demand dropped in a number of sectors, including entertainment, the arts, sports, leisure and legal.

In contrast, it rose sharply in a range of other industries, including telecommunications, education and healthcare.

Year-on-year, demand fell most in areas such as architecture, construction and human resources.
