Digital formats 'can help those who struggle reading paper books'

People who find it difficult to read paper books could find that it is easier to get through text by reading material in a digital format, it has been claimed.

The National Literacy Trust has stated that it is "always interested" in the development of new technology to make reading easier and more accessible to greater numbers of people.

Some people might find that learning using digital formats is a more attractive option than trying to get through large volumes of paper books and reading material.

One adult learner recently highlighted the advantages of taking steps to improve literacy levels.

Declan MacIntyre of Brighton said improving his reading ability had made it possible for him to read to his son each night and to get a job as a project worker.

Through e-learning courses, such as those offered by learndirect, it is possible for learners to improve their adult literacy level or get qualifications in a variety of different areas.

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, strategic development officer at the National Literacy Trust, commented: "It is worth remembering that digital formats are particularly useful for those who may find reading books on paper challenging."

Last month, a roundtable discussion organised by learning provider Line Communications found that learning and training using the internet has become more popular during the recession.

It noted that Web 2.0 technology is being used more and more in the education process, reported Training Journal.

One of the advantages of learning online is that it enables students to fit their studies around their own busy schedules.
