Charity worker recognised for commitment to adult learning

A community involvement worker at Intake and Belle Vue Children's Centre in Yorkshire has been recognised for her commitment to adult learning.

Ursula Lane, a mother or two, had no qualifications and worked in a sandwich shop before she joined the centre, reports the Sheffield Star.

Since starting work with Action for Children, she has embraced all adult learning opportunities offered to her.

In the four years she has been with the organisation, she has obtained an NVQ level three qualification.

She is now responsible for organising courses for parents and carers and the Star claimed she has become a "positive role model for lifelong learning".

Her commitment to studying was recognised at the charity's annual Stephenson Awards - which were set up to acknowledge staff, volunteers and supporters of the organisation - where she received a Lifelong Learning gong.

Paul Moore, strategic director, said: "Action for Children is privileged to have staff members and volunteers who give so much to their local community and make a real difference to the lives of children and young people."

He said Ms Lane's contributions have been "invaluable" to the charity's efforts in Doncaster.

Earlier this month, a classroom assistant who left school without any qualifications reported that she had improved her confidence and career prospects through adult learning.

Sheila Hollern told the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette that her literacy skills have improved since taking an adult learning course and that she is now committed to continuing her education.

Having finished her NVQ level two teaching assistant's course, she moved on to work towards her level three qualification.
