Hospital workers recognised for adult learning achievements

A number of hospital workers have been recognised for their achievements as adult learners.

Members of staff at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases picked up prizes for successfully completing training courses, reports the Bath Chronicle.

Debra Ball won first prize at the Learner of the Year awards after undergoing training to become an administrator for patient records.

She was forced to give up on her career in nursing after suffering a hand injury, but took advantage of adult learning opportunities to pick up new skills and take on a different role at the healthcare facility.

"I was sent on computer training courses to learn new things ... This was particularly helpful when my kids broke the computer at home and I could help them fix it," Ms Ball said.

In addition to a certificate in recognition of her achievement, she was also given a £50 book token.

The award was presented by Paralympic Games silver medallist Ben Rushgrove, who said it was "really encouraging to see people learning".

While Ms Ball was given the main prize for her dedication to adult learning and applying newly acquired skills in the workplace, others were also acknowledged for their efforts.

Workers in areas as diverse as cleaning, customer services, catering and management received certificates for gaining NVQ qualifications at the ceremony.

"As a result of the NVQ, staff have moved on to more challenging roles within the hospital and some have gone on to higher education," hospital chief executive Kirsty Matthews commented.

Last month, Michael Brummit from Benton was recognised at the North East Volunteers Celebration Event for his volunteer work and efforts studying for an NVQ level two qualification, the News Guardian reported.
