The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) has opened up
the nominations for the 2010 Adult Learners' Week Awards.
Campaigns officer Kamy Basra has urged anyone who knows an inspiring adult
learner to put that person forward to receive a gong.
"Every year we receive nominations about inspirational and outstanding
adult learners who have transformed their lives through learning," she
commented.
According to NIACE, there are usually more than 1,000 nominations for
awards every year.
Ms Basra stated that the awards celebrate the "remarkable achievements" of
adult learners and ensure they get recognition for their efforts.
She added that the overall winner is often a "powerful advocate and
inspirational role model" for others thinking of enrolling on an adult
learning course.
"So, if you know an outstanding adult learner, nominate them for an Adult
Learners' Week Award 2010," she commented.
Next year there will be an honour given out for Digital Participation and
an Intergenerational Award.
Those who have improved their literacy levels will also be eligible to
claim the Power of Reading Award.
One of last year's winners was Richard John Stacey who learned to speak,
lip read and sign despite being "profoundly deaf".
He said the gong made him realise that he should not underestimate his
ability to achieve things.
Mr Stacey also completed a teacher training course and has gone on to share
his expertise with others.
Last month, adult learning manager at Kirklees Council Kate Fleming told
the Spenborough Guardian that it is never too late to start an adult
learning course.
