Redditch residents offered chance to complete NVQ

People living in Redditch have been offered the chance to learn more about healthy eating and potentially get an NVQ level two qualification.

Redditch Partnership has been awarded a grant from the Worcestershire Partnership's Health Improvement Fund to set up the Get Cooking project, reports the Redditch Advertiser.

The first phase of the scheme will include cookery demonstrations and opportunities to learn more about diet and nutrition.

There will also be two cookery road shows aimed at young parents and older people who want to improve their skills in the kitchen.

Debbie Baker-Price, NHS health improvement coordinator for the area, said this would be a "fun way of helping people to start eating more healthily".

The second phase will see those who have stuck with the course get the opportunity to complete an NVQ level two qualification in healthier foods and special diets.

Ms Baker-Price said the organisers are hoping that those who take part will then pass on their newly developed skills to friends and family.

"We hope that by showing people how to cook healthy meals and learning about diet and nutrition, they'll develop a lasting love of cooking," she commented.

Getting NVQ qualifications can be a good way to increase confidence in the workplace and improve career prospects.

Jade Thompson, a hairdresser in Sunderland said she opted to enrol on an NVQ course to expand her horizons.

She told the Sunderland Echo that by studying for her level three qualification in hairdressing and a training degree in hair colour, she hopes to be able to eventually realise her goal of travelling as part of her job and sharing her expertise with others.
