Redundant workers advised to improve skills

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) in Wales is advising people facing redundancy to try adding to their skills.

It noted that many professionals face losing their jobs during the economic downturn, but said training to obtain new skills could make people more attractive to prospective employers, reports the Western Mail.

Cathy McLean, director of Rics Wales, noted that this can be a worrying idea for professionals who have a great deal of experience, but who have been employed for many years.

"Many professionals who think they had a job for life are suddenly facing unemployment and having to look for work again, often needing to create a fresh CV. It's unfamiliar territory and professionals in this situation need direction," she said.

The expert noted that the situation has also had an impact on new graduates looking for their first job.

With fewer prospects available, they are having an "equally difficult time" finding a position, Ms McLean commented.

Another expert, Construction Skills consultant Christina Hirst, said those facing redundancy should look to go through a skills analysis.

She advised workers to consider what they are good at as well as which areas they can improve in.

"Undertake training or develop skills … that are more relevant to employers at the moment," she added.

Alternatively, those facing redundancy could use their time without a job as an opportunity to train to start a new career path.

Chris Dunn, a former forklift truck driver, told the Sentinel that after taking voluntary redundancy, he used the opportunity to retrain for a job in the care sector, which he said has been "really rewarding".
