Adult learner sets up his own business

An adult learner who has obtained NVQ qualifications recently set up his own business after being faced with redundancy.

Adam Read of Skegness had worked for Ray Woulds Tyres for four years before he was made redundant earlier this year, reports the Skegness Standard.

The 25-year-old had already completed adult learning courses to get his NVQ level one and two qualifications in the fast fit industry.

However, on losing his job, he opted to enrol on a four-day course to improve his skills further.

He was awarded a £2,000 loan from The Prince's Trust towards the costs of starting his own business.

"It has been really positive since then and the loan has helped me to get everything sorted out," Mr Read said.

Now that he is running his own business, Mr Read offers repairs for tyres and exhausts, wheel alignment, brakes and suspension problems.

His enterprise is open for six days a week and also provides customers with a mobile breakdown service out of hours.

Earlier this year, a pair of adult learners who obtained NVQs in children's care, learning and development went into business together, reported the News Guardian.

Amanda Morris and Jane Waldon left their jobs to set up the Hadrian Park Play Group after gaining their adult learning qualifications. They managed to secure a government grant to invest in new equipment for their playgroup.

Barbara Scott, one of their NVQ assessors, noted that they were clearly both "talented and committed individuals".

Having got their certification and set up their own business, the pair now help others to gain the adult learning qualification.
