Those without jobs should look into getting training and qualifications because now is the ideal time to do so, it has been claimed.
Gareth Davies of Careers Wales told the Western Mail that there are plenty of reasons to stay positive during the economic downturn.
He said that as the UK starts to come out of the slump, more opportunities will become available.
Those struggling to find jobs should consider taking training courses to make themselves more desirable to potential bosses, the expert added.
"It's about getting skilled for when the upturn comes in," Mr Davies commented.
He noted that Germany and Japan are already starting to come out of the recession and claimed that the UK is also likely to do so in the near future.
"Now is the time to get the skills and qualifications for when that happens," he asserted.
The expert said young people in particular need to ensure they are learning or training while without a job.
Lucy O'Connell from Penarth recently spoke positively about learning while on a work placement.
The 18-year-old said she "struck gold" when she found a position that enabled her to train in business administration.
She is now taking an NVQ in the subject while she continues working for Hugh James solicitors in Cardiff.
Adult learning can also be an opportunity for those without employment to gain the knowledge to start a new business venture, as one East Durham resident found.
According to the Sunderland Echo, Kelly Graham studied for an NVQ in floristry and now runs her own enterprise.
