Liverpool Council to fund more apprenticeships

Anyone looking to start an apprenticeship in the Liverpool area will be pleased to hear that Liverpool Council is investing more money into providing a wider range of apprentice programmes over the coming months.

By March 2011, a further 100 apprenticeships are to be made available to local people in both the public and private sectors. Cabinet member for employment and skills at the council, Nick Small, said, "I am really pleased this is happening, we have moved very quickly on this scheme because it is such a priority."

He also explained, "It is not a Liverpool council apprenticeship scheme, it’s a Liverpool scheme that will be delivered by the council in partnership with the public and private sector."

The investment is to total around £1 million and is intended to help young people in the Liverpool area learn at work and achieve qualifications such as NVQs that they can use to boost their future employability.

The Councillor explained that the project intends to widen the variety of apprenticeships available to give young people more choice. Currently, 17 per cent of apprenticeships are in one of just ten career areas.

Councillor Small added, "We want to widen the areas in which apprenticeships are taken and change perceptions of them."

Liverpool Council’s next step is to tender for a social enterprise to be in charge of overseeing the apprenticeship scheme, which hopes will be "up and running" by the autumn.
